Wolves run amok in Subei's grasslands

Farmers in the grasslands of Subei county, Gansu province, are battling a growing population of wolves.

In one village, 150 yaks and 300 goats have been killed by wolves since last October, bringing losses of more than 500,000 yuan ($71,429), according to official statistics.

But wolves are State-protected and the only answer is for farmers to take better care of their livestock, Dong Yuanfeng, director of the county's agriculture and animal husbandry bureau, said.

Craftsman keeps the big candle burning

Ever seen a 60 kg, 1.2 m tall candle that can burn for a year?

A Shaanxi resident surnamed Zhao is one of the only people in the country able to make these examples of non-material protected cultural heritage. Zhao, 71, has been making the candles for 41 years. He learned the craft from his father.

"The technology used to be a secret handed down by my family, but I want to teach those who want to learn in order to keep the craft alive," Zhao said.
